Morenci volleyball team turns in a strong showing

MORENCI — The Morenci varsity volleyball team entered the 2025 season with a new coach and a goal of changing the culture of the program. 

Head coach Erin Ekins didn’t have to wait long for her squad to demonstrate they truly wanted a different season from years past.

MORENCI — First-year head cross country coach Tony Muzzi inherited a program returning only one athlete from its previous season and losing three runners to graduation. The Bulldogs finished the year with three high school athletes as well as three middle school athletes. 

“And not just middle schoolers, they’re sixth graders,” Muzzi said. “So if they stick with it they will be in the program for seven years.”

MORENCI — The Morenci varsity volleyball team is looking to change the trajectory and culture of the program during the 2025 season. 

First-year head coach Erin Ekins aims to bring stability and passion to the student athletes.

MORENCI – Ryan McDowell steps into the role as the Top Dog for the Morenci Bulldogs and their 8-man football program this 2025 season.

A 2003 graduate of Morenci, McDowell takes on the head spot once held by Mike McDowell. “My dad coached and taught here for over 30 years,” McDowell said of his dad, who coached two stints for the Bulldogs during the late 1990s and early 2010s.

New coach hopes to reinvigorate Morenci’s cross country program

MORENCI — Having been a cross country runner himself in high school, Tony Muzzi has an appreciation for the sport. 

Now, as Morenci’s new cross country coach, he’s hoping to bring new energy to the program — and more numbers. There were four varsity runners on last fall’s roster, and three of them were seniors. But Muzzi feels there’s a lot to appreciate about cross country as a discipline.

SHEPHERD — The Morenci Middle School Track and Field team sent two athletes to the Mid Michigan MEGASTAR Meet on June 5 in Shepherd.

Eighth graders Aubrie Sandusky and Jordan Ekins competed in the 800m run and shot put respectively. And both girls saved their best for last.

MORENCI — The Morenci varsity boys track and field team crowned four regional champs, sent six athletes to the MHSAA State Finals meet, and broke a school record this year.
